Ken Toll talks about Basic Family History in England and Wales

Ken Toll is a retired public servant (Electronics & IT Engineer, 18 years MoD & 18
Years Met Police). He has been researching his family history since the mid 1980s
and is currently a Vice President of the Guild of One-Name Studies.

This talk will introduce the following basic sources of information to compile a family tree and suggest where to find them.
Civil Registration (births, marriages, and deaths: 1837 – present day)
Church Records (baptisms, marriages, and burials: 1538 – present day)
Census Records (1841 – 1921)
The 1939 Register
Wills (from 1400 - present day)
The use of a computer and access to the Internet is assumed.

Andy Thomas talks about Christmas: A Festive History

In an uplifting and entertaining presentation, Andy Thomas uncovers the long and intriguing background to the festive season. From the ancient celebration of light in the winter darkness, to the marking of the birth of a messiah, Andy shows how we can still find meaning in Christmas today. Andy is the author of Christmas – From Solstice to Santa. He is also author of several books on unexplained mysteries as well as guides to Sussex history and folklore (including the Lewes Bonfire Night traditions). Andy widely writes and lectures and has made numerous radio and TV appearances.

 

FRIENDS FRIDAY QUIZ

Fri 17 May from 1.15pm for 1.30pm start, Spotlight Room

The popular quiz run by quizmaster Rod Saward offers Friends a chance to join teams and test their general knowledge in a friendly and fun environment.
