About the show

Emma Johnson (clarinet and conductor) plays Mozart with the Orchestra for the Environment

Hear Mozart’s timeless Clarinet Concerto played by internationally acclaimed clarinettist, Emma Johnson MBE, who first came to prominence winning the BBC Young Musican Competition and since then has made over thirty recordings. Mozart wrote his Clarinet Concerto at the very end of his life and his melodic gifts showcase the contrasting registers and colours of the clarinet in a way that arguably has never been bettered.

Emma is joined for this concert by the orchestra she founded with her husband, the Orchestra for the Environment. This team of top professional players will play beautiful music inspired by nature from their new album: Holst’s charming Brook Green Suite, Puccini’s Chrysanthemums and the witty Walking the Dog by Gershwin. Also on the bill are arrangements for clarinet and orchestra of favourite folk songs The Lark in the Clear Air, Down by the Salley Gardens and Tom he was a Piper’s Son.

The musicians return to Mozart to close the concert with his unforgettable masterpiece, Symphony No. 40 in g minor. It is one of the composer’s greatest achievements, showing for the first time the full possibilities of the symphonic form. Tragedy, rage, exhilaration and spirit - all are there!
