First Friday Talks
Fri 2 February 2-4pm, Studio
Derek Pratt MBE: Sussex Community Search Team
Sussex Community Search Team (SCST) is an all-volunteer group of dedicated and enthusiastic people who are ready and willing to be called out at short notice by Sussex Police, neighbouring police forces or participants in the Sussex Resilience Forum (SRF). During incidents and emergencies, the SRF brings together emergency services, councils, utilities and other essential public and voluntary services to work in partnership to support the local community.
Today SCST has around 100 fully trained and police vetted volunteers who freely give up their time to help the police, when requested, in our primary role to try to locate vulnerable missing people in Sussex or neighbouring counties, often in urgent situations.
All members of SCST are trained in the latest search techniques, and are on call throughout the year, across all terrains and in all weather conditions.
In addition, they assist the police in other ways such as helping to train officers, carrying out safety sweeps to ensure that open areas are safe for members of the public to enjoy, and helping with Community Resilience. Examples of this include delivering water in emergencies, helping in Covid vaccination centres, and assisting other agencies such as the Fire Service and Environment Agency.

This interesting talk is being given by Derek Pratt, Chair of SCST, also one of their Teram Leaders and First Aiders. In the Queen’s Birthday Honours List 2020 Derek was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE), for services to Crime Prevention and Public Safety.

Pat And Alan Kingshott: The Crown Jewels
Pat and Alan Kingshott will join us for a fascinating 45-minute talk delving into the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom. They will delve into the history of the royal ceremonial objects, how they are used, where they were found, and the ceremony of the coronation itself.
Fri 5 April 2-4pm, Studio
Malcolm Eynon: Evening Class to Pure Class! – 70 Years of COS Musical Theatre
Former member Malcolm Eynon takes a light-hearted look at the history of COS Musical Theatre, with some of its most popular principal players singing for you “live”.
From its evening institute beginnings in the 1950s, this group took on the name Crawley Operatic Society and then later, COS Musical Theatre.
Malcolm will share facts and funnies - before, during and after his own 30 years with COS; onstage, backstage, rehearsals, auditions… and of course the odd bit of gossip!
With songs from Sue and Derek Sturt, Kathy Stokes, Jo Williams and Malcolm himself, this will be a nostalgic musical treat – not to be missed.
