Acoustic Blues Weekend

A weekend of workshops, jams and performance organised by Michael Roach.

The weekend will offer classes starting Friday from 1pm to 5pm followed by a concert by the tutors at 7.45pm. Weekend bookers attend concert free.

On Saturday, classes will run from 10am to 5pm and there will be an evening jam session from 8pm to midnight for ‘participants only’. On Sunday, classes will start at 10am and end at 3pm. The classes will cater for all levels of ability and we highly recommend that you bring along a portable recorder so you can recall your lessons for future reference. The tutors for the ‘Acoustic Blues Weekend’ are Will Wilde (harmonica), Steve James (bottleneck slide guitar) and Sonny Black (country blues guitar).

Will Wilde picked up his first harmonica at the age of 16 and played it until his lips bled. With knowledge and respect for the original masters of the instrument, his live show has been described as 'A masterclass of blues harp playing, bar none.' (Blues in the North West). For the weekend, Will's class will focus on improvising and building your own solo's using the blues scale and the major pentatonic scale. Students will study classic blues songs by the likes of Sonny Boy Williamson and Little Walter as examples. You will also learn how to accompany a vocalist and play over various blues chord progressions.

Steve James is a touring veteran of the U.K. blues and folk scene. Along with his touted live shows and numerous recordings, Steve has created volumes of roots music instruction in print, video and on line. For the weekend, Steve will detail and demonstrate slide guitar song arrangements that incorporate basic techniques and tunings. These will be applied to phrasing, harmony and rhythms that informed the work of great slide guitarists such as Furry Lewis and Tampa Red along with some useful devices from Steve’s own varied repertoire.

Sonny Black first picked up the acoustic guitar in the late 1960’s after hearing ‘San Francisco Bay Blues’ by the great Jesse Fuller. He now performs a blend of roots music that includes fingerstyle blues, ragtime, old time country and original compositions. For the weekend, Sonny will look at tunes from Scrapper Blackwell, Maybelle Carter and a great piece by Woody Mann that will expand on chord ideas, arrangement and improvisation. Whilst aimed at intermediate guitarists, Sonny will try to help those who are new players with tips, ideas and a tune to take their playing to the next level.
