Rachmaninov     Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini

Tchaikovsky     Symphony No.5

Borodin’s Prince Igor Overture begins this programme of Russian gems. After a haunting opening, the music takes you through thrilling, fast-paced passages interspersed with moments of poignancy and lush string melodies.

Following this is Rachmaninov’s fiendish Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, performed by celebrated pianist Tom Poster. This mischievous piece combines playful passages with quieter, more sombre sections, culminating in a dazzling finale.

The concert concludes with Tchaikovsky’s enrapturing Symphony No.5.
